• A Triumph of Common Sense – WELL meets BREEAM

It was officially announced earlier today that two of the leading building standards representing sustainability and health and well-being have reached an agreement that will see each organisation mutually recognise specific credits making it easier for projects pursuing both standards. This is nothing short of a triumph of common sense that will see the drive for sustainable buildings that support the health and well-being of occupants accelerated.

  • An easier route to healthy, sustainable buildings

Following last year’s refreshing announcement that the WELL Building Standard would be aligned with global sustainability standard BREEAM, there is further good news this week with the BRE and the International WELL Building Institute™ (IWBI™) publishing a briefing paper which will greatly simplify the process of obtaining both a Certified BREEAM and a WELL Certified™ rating.

  • Bath Low Carbon Business Breakfast - The Cinderella of Sustainable Building Projects?

This month, Energy Assessor Katherine Piper attended ‘The Cinderella of Sustainable Building Projects’ event, a Low Carbon South West networking and information event regarding retrofit and refurbishment. The benefits of refurbishment were presented, with case studies from Integral Engineering Design and Stride Treglown Architects.

  • Take a leaf out of the new rule book – collaboration is king

Last week the International WELL Building Institute (IWBI), along with RESETBRE and the Green Building Council of Australia (GBCA) announced a joint agreement to work together to develop a coordinated set of global standards and guidelines for indoor and outdoor environmental monitoring systems and sensors. Whilst at face value this might not sound like a big step, it is in fact a huge step and one that shows that genuine collaboration and sharing of resources, knowledge and connections can facilitate change.

  • The WELL Building Standard

    The WELL Building Standard:

We have joined the movement to advance buildings that help people work, live, perform and feel their best.

The WELL Building Standard™ (WELL) is the first building standard to focus exclusively on the health and wellness of the people in buildings. WELL is a performance-based system for measuring and certifying features of buildings that impact human health and wellbeing, through air, water, nourishment, light, fitness, comfort and mind.

It marries best practices in design and construction with evidence-based medical and scientific research – harnessing buildings and communities as a vehicle to support human wellbeing.

WELL can be applied across many building types and sectors, from brand new restaurants to office building renovations and can be applied to new and existing building, new and existing interiors, and core and shell.

Over 350 projects encompassing over 76 million square feet are utilizing well, learn about some of the projects here

    Services we offer:

We are passionate about people; we believe that improving the way we work and live by enhancing environments where health and wellbeing, as well as sustainability, are at the forefront will help to deliver a better quality of life for all.

    We can support you with:

    • WELL Accredited Professionals™ (WELL AP™)
WELL AP™ are professionals who have demonstrated to the WELL Building Institute that they understand the detailed requirements of the WELL Building standard.
A WELL AP can help guide projects to successful certification or compliance awards.  A WELL AP can also be the Project Administrator.  Although project teams are not required to include a WELL AP, having one will help address all necessary aspects of WELL and will also gain you additional credits.

    • Project Administrator
Project administrators act as project manager and oversee the WELL process.  This individual is responsible for ensuring that all project documentation is complete and accurate before submitting for review.  The project administrator is ultimately responsible for the overall quality of the documents submitted and is expected to complete a thorough quality control check of all documentation and forms prior to submission for review.

    • BREEAM Assessors and BREEAM Accredited Professionals
Our qualified and experienced BREEAM Assessors and APs can also support and work with you on projects wishing to obtain both a certified BREEAM rating and a WELL Certification.  They can offer advice and understanding on the collaboration between BREEAM and WELL.

We are already working on a few ‘WELL’ projects which we are excited about and will be able to share those details over the coming weeks.

How BREEAM and WELL work together:

The collaboration between BREEAM and WELL will now provide a more cohesive approach to delivering projects that place sustainability and human health and wellbeing at the top of the agenda.  Learn more here

  • WELL now’s the time to make buildings even better

Sceptics among us might say that we don’t need another building standard, but when you consider that we spend over 90% of our time indoors, it would seem prudent that the physical places where we live, work and play should be built for health and wellness. The WELL Building Standard™ (WELL) is the first building standard to focus on just that – the health and wellness of the people in buildings – and is set to become the benchmark across the globe.

  • Well, Well, Well

Sustainability has been at the top of the agenda for many years but I have an ever-increasing feeling that much of the industry is missing the next step. Creating sustainable buildings is very important, but we shouldn’t forget the fact that we are creating buildings for people and the well-being of these people should be the priority. So the question is: Are we putting buildings before people?
