Built in 1872, the Jacobean-style Burwalls House in Bristol is set to undergo major redevelopment to create a series of new high-specification residential properties. Appointed at the planning stage, we provided a series of energy assessments to help the complex project receive planning permission and allow construction to begin.
Located adjacent to the iconic Clifton Suspension Bridge, Burwalls House includes a 19th century Grade II Listed mansion and landscaped grounds. Purchased in 2013 for £4 million by the Kersfield Group, the site is being redeveloped with the creation of five new apartments, six new houses and a converted lodge – designed and built to strike a balance between historical preservation and sympathetic development.
Working with the architect and contractor, we produced a series of energy assessments and reports to ensure the project would meet the targeted energy reduction and secure a sustainable future for the whole development.
With planning permission a challenge for the Grade II Listed house, and the use of renewables part of planning conditions, we worked with the contractor to remodel the buildings. Improving thermal efficiency in the stables and new build elements by using high performance insulation where possible, we were able to reduce the 15% energy target through renewables.
“We provided an Energy Statement, SAP and SBEM Calculations to help the new-build elements achieve Code Level 3 and the whole site hit a 15% reduction in energy,” commented Marcus Eves, Senior Consultant. “To minimise both energy demand and the use of renewables, we upgraded the existing stables to current regulations and improved the energy efficiency of the new build elements.”
With the development set for completion in 2016, we have ensured the new development will have a sustainable future as well as having full compliance with the rigorous planning policies and building regulations required.
