Code for Sustainable Homes (CfSH) is an environmental assessment method for rating and certifying the performance of new homes.  

Since March 2016 CfSH is no longer a legal requirement, however many local authorities, London boroughs and planning officers still work to CfSH standards and may require it for proposed new developments.

CfSH has six different rating levels, each representing a decrease in carbon emissions and an increase in sustainability standards across nine categories. 

A ‘zero carbon home’ would receive the top rating of CfSH Level 6.

There are three difference phases to a CfSH assessment; pre-assessment, design stage and post construction stage.  

You will need to achieve credits within the nine different code categories and the number of credits will depend on the level required. The nine categories are:

  1. Energy and CO₂ Emissions (m)
  2. Water (m)
  3. Materials (m)
  4. Surface Water run-off (m)
  5. Waste (m)
  6. Pollution
  7. Health and Well-being (m)
  8. Management
  9. Ecology

Some of the categories have mandatory (m) elements that must be achieved relating to the CfSH level you are seeking to achieve.  With regards to Health and Well-being, the Lifetime Homes Category is also mandatory if you are undertaking a Level 6 assessment.
