BREEAM is one of the world’s most recognised sustainability assessment methods. It sets the standard for best practice in sustainable design, construction and operation helping clients across the UK create buildings that are healthier, more efficient, and more resilient.
The framework can be applied across various life-cycle stages, including new construction, refurbishment and in-use. Buildings are scored via a credit-based system across nine categories: management, health & wellbeing, energy, transport, water, materials, waste, land use & ecology, and pollution. These credits then determine the final BREEAM rating: Pass, Good, Very Good, Excellent or Outstanding.
At Darren Evans, we offer independent, clear and practical BREEAM consultancy to guide you through every step of the process. Our assessors don’t just issue certificates they work closely with you to make the process less intimidating and more impactful.
“We spend a lot of time supporting people like you through the process,” says Anna Da Col, Head of Operations.
“Our focus is on demystifying the BREEAM assessment requirements and helping you understand what practical processes and procedures need to be implemented on site.”
Why Early Engagement Matters
To embed sustainability into your project effectively, it’s essential to engage your BREEAM consultant as early as possible ideally before planning submission. Many credits can only be secured during RIBA Stages 0–2. If missed, it becomes harder to reach Excellent, and often impossible to reach Outstanding.
"Not capturing discussions and decisions at the early stages is one of the biggest mistakes we see,” adds Anna.
“So often the work has been done — but without the documentation in place, the credits can’t be awarded.”
By engaging a BREEAM consultancy early, you’re not just maximising your score, you’re making better decisions about how your building functions, how much it costs to run, and the impact it will have in the long term.
